When to Get a Prenup Agreement

Prenup Agreement

As of 2010, only about 3% of couples were getting prenuptial agreements prior to their weddings. But as of 2022, that number has jumped all the way up to 15%.

Are you thinking about getting a prenup before getting married? If so, you should know when it makes sense to have a prenuptial agreement in place. It’ll help you decide if a marital prenup is necessary.

We’ve put together a list of some of the instances in which you might want to get a prenup. Find out about them below.

You Have Significant Assets

Do you have a pile of money stashed away in your savings account? Or do you own multiple homes, businesses, and/or other assets?

If you just answered “yes” to one or both of these questions, you might be able to benefit from a prenup. It’ll ensure that you’re able to hang onto your assets both when you’re married and in the event of a divorce.

Just make sure you work with a great family law attorney who can talk to you about what to ask for in a prenup.

You Own a Business

If you own a business, you’ve likely worked very hard to keep it afloat. The last thing you want to do is lose part or even all of this business if you go through a divorce one day.

This is yet another reason why you should strongly consider getting a prenup. You can make sure you don’t ever have to worry about losing your business by putting a prenup in place.

You Have Children From a Previous Relationship

If you have children already from a previous relationship, you want to be sure they’re protected just in case you ever get divorced from your soon-to-be spouse. You don’t want them to lose everything you were planning to give to them during a divorce.

A prenup is a wonderful way to provide your kids with the protection they need. This is one time when you’ll want to push hard for a prenup.

You’ve Been Divorced Before

The argument against getting a prenup has always been that it feels like it dooms a couple to get divorced from the start. It can sometimes make one person in a relationship feel as though the other person doesn’t trust them fully.

But if you’ve been divorced before, you have every reason to have at least a little bit of doubt about the longevity of your marriage. It’s better to be safe than sorry by protecting yourself with a prenup. Your significant other should respect this and understand why you would want to have a prenup drawn up in the first place.

See If Makes Sense for You to Get a Prenup

Now that you know when you should think about getting a prenup, you should give some serious thought to whether or not you’d like to get one. Consider your situation and decide if it would make sense for you and your significant other to have a prenup created.
